Where to Start, When to Stop: A Parent's Guide to Supplements for Autistic Children
As a parent of an autistic child, diving into the world of supplements feels like walking into a candy store. There are endless choices, bright promises, and a whole lot of overwhelm.
The Journey Begins
Where do you begin? And more importantly, when do you stop?
For my family, gummies are a lifeline. They’re the only way we sneak in essential nutrients like omega-3s or fruit and veggie blends. Our kitchen counter resembles a candy shop, and I’m just grateful my son is chomping on vitamin gummies instead of a bag of Haribo!
The Challenge of Choices
But let’s be real: navigating the supplement world is a challenge. With products like “Spectrum Gummies,” “Magic Fish Oil,” or “Super Magnesium,” it sometimes feels like the industry is capitalizing on our hopes as parents. They offer endless promises to support our kids.
It’s a real-life Candy Crush, and we’re all trying to avoid the snake oil while finding what actually works.
The market is flooded with supplements claiming to boost immune health, aid digestion, improve sleep, or sneak in those elusive vegetables. But the decisions are daunting:
What do our kids really need?
How much is too much?
When is enough, enough?
Could a balanced diet be better? And what about our picky eaters?
Observing Our Children
Then I look at my 5-year-old son, strong and energetic, weighing 23 kg of muscle, happily trekking kilometers. Or his friend on the spectrum, 28 kg and thriving on a protein- and veggie-rich diet. Or the little girl at the park, swinging on monkey bars with her flowing hair and radiant smile. These kids are incredible! Do they really need all these supplements?
The Quest for Answers
Like many parents, I’ve gone the extra mile. I’ve done blood tests, hair and nail samples—you name it—to check my son’s nutrient levels. The results? He’s often just fine. Or, from one day to the next, these levels change depending on what he eats. So, where do we draw the line?
The Relentless Industry
The supplement industry is relentless, rolling out new products to ease our worries. As parents, we’ll never stop wanting the best for our kids. We test, we research, we try. We whip up smoothies, soups, and homemade meals, becoming parent-chefs in the quest for better nutrition. We limit junk food and explore every avenue to keep our kids healthy.
Building a Supportive Community
So, I’m turning to you, fellow parents. How do you navigate the supplement maze? What’s worked for your child? Are there gummies or other supplements that have made a real difference? Share your tips, your wins, and even your frustrations. Let’s figure this out together and focus on what truly supports our amazing kids.
Conclusion: Finding Balance
In the end, it’s about balance. We want our children to thrive, and that often means making informed choices about their nutrition. Supplements can play a role, but they shouldn’t replace the foundation of a balanced diet.
Let’s continue to support each other on this journey. We’re all in this together, navigating the ups and downs of parenting autistic children.

Gummies are esential for us as well.Chalenge is to find right ones and to taste good (very subjective)
We are lucky that our familly travels to US often as there is great variety there. We were strugling to get everything in Athens.
